Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally as personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students ‘who want to go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

“I came to Maastricht for my bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences, but I discovered I wanted to be more involved in hands-on medicine in a globalised setting. My attention was drawn to this International Track in Medicine.

Intercultural awareness and sensitivity is very important to me. In this three-year English-taught bachelor’s programme you learn to become a doctor, but with a focus on an international context. A pregnant woman in Kenya for example, encounters different circumstances than a pregnant woman in the Netherlands. There is also more focus on illnesses that are more typical outside the Netherlands.

I chose to come to Maastricht because – to me – it’s a home away from home. It’s open, friendly, warm and very international. Besides, there is a lot of nature and beautiful countryside too. This programme is unique because it combines the international and English-taught track with the Problem-Based Learning system of the UM. I love all the new skills we are learning and that feeling of togetherness and support.

I want to become a part of the new generation of doctors who are more hands-on and involved in the new structure of globalised medicine. My dream career would be to become a neonatal surgeon, travelling around the world, adapting to the cultures I encounter. Curaçao will be where I want to retire.”
